Gajendra Singh Khimsar

Gajendra Singh Khimsar (b. 25 December 1957) brings together the dignity of a royal lineage with over four decades of visible leadership—in the squash court, the boardroom and the halls of government. As a four-time MLA and current Cabinet Minister of Medical & Health for Rajasthan, he has devoted his life to building healthier, more prosperous communities. Equally at home overseeing a heritage hotel or organizing a rural health camp, Mr. Khimsar believes that true leadership honors the past by serving the present.

Biography

Early Years & Education

Born into the storied Khimsar royal family, young Gajendra Singh spent his formative years between Khimsar Fort and the foothills of Dehra Dun. He attended Welham Prep and then The Doon School, before earning a B.A. at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi (1975–78) and a BBA from the University of Western Ontario, Canada (1979–83)

Sporting Glory

 A natural athlete, Mr. Khimsar became India’s Junior Squash National Champion in 1977 and represented the country at the World Team Championship in 1978. In 1981 he reached the semifinals of both the U.S. Open and the Canadian Open, claimed the U.S. Intercollegiate title, and closed the season ranked #33 in the world.

Public Service

Returning to Rajasthan in the mid-1980s, he restored Khimsar Fort and uplifted local artisans. Elected MLA in 2003, he has served as minister for Energy, Forests, Youth & Sports, and now Medical & Health. His efforts have brought electricity to villages, boosted tree-planting, started sports leagues, and launched mobile medical units.

Sports Achievements

Before entering public life, Shri Gajendra Singh was an internationally ranked squash player. His sporting career is decorated with remarkable achievements:

  • 1977: Junior National Champion (Squash)
  • 1978: Member of Indian Squad – Men’s World Team Squash Championship,
  • 1981: US Intercollegiate Squash Champion, Semi-Finalist – US Open & Canadian Open
  • 1982: World Ranking – No. 33 in Professional Squash Association (USA) & Ranked No. 2 in Canada

His excellence in sports continues to inspire young athletes in Rajasthan and across India.

Political Career

Shri Gajendra Singh Khimsar has represented the people of Rajasthan in the Legislative Assembly across four terms:

  • 12th Vidhan Sabha (2003) – Elected as MLA
  • 13th Vidhan Sabha (2008) – Re-elected
  • 14th Vidhan Sabha (2013) – Re-elected
  • 16th Vidhan Sabha (2023) – Re-elected

Ministerial Portfolios Held:

  • 2003–2008: Minister of State – Energy, Government of Rajasthan
  • 2013–2018: Cabinet Minister – Energy, Industries, Sports, Forest & Environment
  • 2023–Present: Cabinet Minister – Medical, Health & Family Welfare


His tenure in each of these ministries is marked by forward-thinking reforms – from boosting Rajasthan’s energy infrastructure and industrial growth, to fostering youth participation in sports, to advancing environmental conservation, and most recently, spearheading health initiatives post-COVID with a focus on access, awareness, and medical innovation.

Social Initiatives

Mobile Health Clinics

Every month, medical vans tour 30+ villages to provide free check-ups, screenings and health education—over 12,000 patients served in the last year alone.

Artisan Cooperative

Partnering with local women, he’s helped launch a craft cooperative based at Khimsar Fort that preserves Rajasthani textile and pottery traditions while boosting household incomes.

Youth Sports League

Annual tournaments in cricket, badminton and athletics bring over 3,000 young athletes together, fostering teamwork, discipline and healthy living.

Scholarship Fund

Each year, 50 meritorious students from under-resourced families receive scholarships to pursue higher education—breaking cycles of poverty through opportunity.
